La Muralla Roja: Unforgettable Stay in Colorful Spain

February 10, 2021

If you’ve read our last post about all the things you can do in Calpe you may have seen that we stayed in La Muralla Roja, one of the most famous building in Spain. Some of you asked me for a more detailed guide about this place and my honest opinion about it, so here it is.

Muralla Roja Calpe

La Muralla Roja was designed by Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill in 1968. In designing the building, Bofill referenced the architecture of North African casbahs.

Located only 5-10 mins by car from the main town, you will be surrounded by one of the most colorful and different buildings in the wold.

How to visit La muralla Roja

The only way to visit this place is by staying on a Airbnb, which may cost you a fortune as they take advantage of tourists here. We decided to go during low season and paid 55 euros a night instead of 150 euros per day.

The rooms are small but it was worth visiting this place. Be aware you can’t go in unless you are a guest otherwise the security guard will call the police, and drones are not permitted (they have an especial sensor that will block the signal and it will fall down).Muralla Roja CalpeThe Room

Rooms in the building are built as cubicles so don’t expect a big room, there are only 4 big ones on top of the building that can host up to 4 people.

Our room cost us 55 euros (We went during low season and in 2021) and even if it was small it was ok. Kitchen, living room and bedroom are all together. Bathroom is inside a closet. The good thing is that we have a massive terrace just for our selves to enjoy breakfast in the morning.Muralla Roja Calpe

The Pool

On top of the building you will find a pool shaped as a cross. The only way to access is with the keys from your Airbnb. We visited in November so we didn’t go in as it was dirty and quite cold! The pool area is quite small and there’s no grass, just concrete.Dscf9277.Jpg

The Building

La Muralla is divided in 4 different areas based on colors: Pink, red, blue and purple

Each one separated from each other. It can be tricky to get from one to the other as it is real maze. The red zone is secluded on the left side looking straight to the sea as well as the pink one, which is the biggest area with terraces for breakfast.

In the middle of the building below the pool you will find the little blue area composed in 4 stairs that will lead you to the top floor.

Be aware the building is really old and we didn’t see much maintenance and the elevator didn’t work (probably it has not worked for years).

The surroundings

Below the Muralla Roja you will find a little beach to enjoy during summer, perfect for paddle boarding as there are no waves here.

If you walk down the stone stairs on the left it will lead you to an abandon building that once belong to La Muralla for all neighbors to use. It had a cafe, a terrace and a rock pool by the ocean.

There are no supermarkets or shops near the building, only one bar 6 mins walking distance from it. You will need to move by taxi (7euros to the main village) or by car.

Our experience

Was it worth staying here? For us, yes.

Cons:

We were glad we did not come during peak season, as I don’t think 150euros a night is worth it.

  1. The rooms are very small, building is very old, some parts are falling down and the elevator was full of dust and probably hasn’t been working for years. (Not wheelchair or kid friendly as there are stairs to every single houses)
  2. We had a bad experience with our Airbnb as they texted us telling us we had to pick up the keys from the other side of the city (45 mins walking) and we didn’t bring the car. We tried to contact them and no one reply, not even when we complained.
  3. They asked to return the keys to the same place and we just left them inside the airbnb when we left as we weren’t going to cross the whole city to return the keys.
  4. Can only visit if you are staying here, there’s a 24h guard during high season and drone radars. Which is fare, to avoid hundreds of people here. But they also take advantage of your money

Pros

  1. Architectural Marvel: Experience the awe-inspiring beauty of La Muralla Roja’s unique and colorful architecture, offering an unforgettable backdrop for your stay.
  2. Paradise for Photographers: As a haven for photography enthusiasts, this location presents endless opportunities to capture stunning shots amidst its vibrant and picturesque surroundings.
  3. Ideal Summer Retreat: With its own little beach downstairs and a convenient 5-minute car ride to the main village, it provides a perfect summer escape, combining relaxation and exploration in one delightful package.
